The purpose of the clinic is to provide
first aid to school related illnesses and injuries. It is not intended
to take the place of parent or physician directed medical care. However,
the school nurse will perform any treatments deemed necessary during
the course of the school day. Dressing changes, breathing treatments, catheterizations
are some procedures that can be easily done at school, allowing children
with these needs to miss very little school in spite of their medical
condition.
Often parents are confused as to
the criteria the nurse uses in her decision to allow children to remain
in school or be discharged home. The following guidelines may be helpful:
Children are sent
home when the following occurs:
children with fevers 100 degrees or higher |
Suspected Serious Injury
fractured bones |
blow to head |
Suspected Contagious Conditions
scarlet fever |
lice |
impetigo |
chicken pox |
Suspected Serious Illness
severe respiratory distress |
vomiting |
severe allergic reaction |
Medications are kept at school for
many students. A written permission form signed by the child's doctor
and parent is required before any medication can be administered by
the nurse. Parents are required to bring their child's medication
to school. Children are not to transport their medication to school.
